Chosŏn Dress in the Written Conversations of 17th to Early 18th Century Missions to Japan2020 •
This study examines the perception and attitudes of Japanese literati towards Chosŏn dress in 17th-18th century written conversations. The first written conversation to mention such dress appears in a conversation between Hayashi Razan and Mun Hongchŏk on shenyi (深衣). The first mention of dress in poetry exchanges can be seen in the written conversation collection of 1655, which appears again in a poetry exchange during the 1682 mission. The admiration of Chosŏn dress originated from the veneration of Chinese culture, an attitude prominent among Kinoshita Jun'an and his disciples and their ilk. On the other hand, Hitomi Yugen and others verified the historical accuracy of the dress. Mentions of Chosŏn dress grew more frequent with the proliferation of written conversations during the 1711 mission. Such mentions occurred as follows: First, frequent praise of the solemnity of Chosŏn dress in poetry exchanges and written conversations. Second, research on the names and making of Chosŏn dress expanded as a result of developments in Japanese Confucianism per a deepened understanding of Chinese culture, which was also influenced by the trend of encyclopedic studies in Japanese scholarship. Third, Chosŏn was regarded as the sole preserver of Chinese culture after the fall of the Ming dynasty, with Arai Hakuseki arguing that Chosŏn dress was evidence of subordination to China. Hakuseki also advanced the theory that the Japanese emperor’s court preserved ancient Chinese culture. This view, which corresponded with that of the Sorai school, appears in written conversations since the 1748 mission.

“우리 마누라”의 문법2009 •
If we can propose that the Korean expression "우리 마누라" (our wife) is referential in some sense, then some of the impressions of that expression that it is not grammatical can be overcome. Donnellan believes that an expression is open to both attributive and referential uses. While the expression "우리 마누라" is assumed to function as an ordinary Korean expression when her husband utters it in a specific context, it is believed to be used only referentially and not attributively. This asymmetry suggests that "우리 마누라" is argued to be used only in a referential sense and not as an attributive pronoun. A contemporary Greek speaker may use the Greek word corresponding the term "aleteia", not having to consider its original sense of ‘uncovering’. Likewise a contemporary Korean may use the Korean word, not having to worry about its attributive sense of ‘our husband’, but just conveying a partial affirmation of the worldview of the ancient Korean community, which preferred an extended family or village community.

Record of a Journey to Japan and Chŏng Hukyo’s Perception of Japan2019 •
This study examines the characteristics of Record of a Journey to Japan (扶桑紀行, Pusang kihaeng) written during the 1719 embassy and the perception of Japan by its author, Chŏng Hukyo. Chŏng was recognized as a prominent poet among Noron literati such as Kim Chang-hŭp and Sin Chŏng-ha during the reign of King Sukjong. As a soldier of the 1719 mission to vice envoy Hwang Sŏn, he was responsible for exchanging poetry with the Japanese along with the embassy’s clerks and secretaries. Joining the mission to Japan was a form of leisure for him, and this is apparent from how his emissary record focuses on detailed such sightseeing experiences rather than on information. The record mainly focuses on sensory descriptions of scenery and unique sights as well as recreating the exchange of diaries and poetry in written conversations with Japanese literati. In particular, it is noteworthy for its vivid descriptions of diverse experiences such as whale hunting and sites of poetry exchange not found in other emissary records. Moreover, Chŏng’s perception of Japan can be analyzed from three aspects. The first of these is approval of Japan’s legal system and national strength. The second is a sensitive reappraisal of Japanese character and customs from a sympathetic viewpoint. The third is a new understanding of Japan’s civilization through an adaptation of the discourse of Sino-barbarian dichotomy (華夷論, hwa-yi-ron). The last is particularly interesting in its adaptation, or roundabout modifying, of the premises of an existing concept among Chosŏn intellectuals to produce a new understanding. The above investigation of Record of a Journey to Japan demonstrates several important points for analysis in research on emissary records. A comparison with records from the same or different time periods will broaden the scope of the study.

Early Mandarin Loanwords in Hunmong Jahoe2021 •
This paper studies the Early Mandarin loanwords in Hunmong Jahoe Hunmong Jahoe is a Chinese character Textbook written during the Joseon Dynasty. Each Chinese character is introduced together with its pronunciation (音) and meaning (訓) written in the Korean alphabet Hunmin Jeongeum (訓民正音). The meaning part was analysed one by one using four criteria that were mainly based on phonological clues. The result showed that there are 47 words that can be categorised as Early Mandarin loanwords. 8 loanwords that were not mentioned in previous studies have been newly added to the list and each of them was proven by an etymological explanation. However, there are 8 words that were mentioned as Early Mandarin loanwords in other research, but are excluded from our list of loanwords due to lack of phonological evidence. Keywords: loanwords, etymology, Early Mandarin, Sino-Korean, historical linguistics

A Study of the Compilation of Embassy to Japan Written Conversations - Featuring Chosenjin raichō o tsumura goba hitsugo as a Case Study2019 •
This study examines the compilation process of written conversations through the case of the 1763(-64) embassy written conversation collection Chosenjin raichō o tsumura goba hitsugo Written conversation collections are sources of poetry and written conversations between Koreans on diplomatic missions visiting Japan with Edo period Japanese literati. As these are records of conversations, their authorship is unclear and ultimately the editor plays a crucial role in their compilation. Such sources are especially noteworthy for creating the impression of “recreating” conversations that took place. Therefore, it is essential to examine the nature and significance of these sources by analyzing their compilation process. Chosenjin contains both the handwritten grass script of Koreans and transcriptions of questions by Japanese, with sixteen of the total eighty-five questions and answers in the appendix of the print book Ryōkō yowa In other words, we can ascertain that the editor of both texts, Sadakane Ku (衢貞謙) inserted his own written conversations. After first examining the structure and characteristics of Chosenjin, the study investigates the compilation process in two stages: 1) the compilation process of the original manuscript Chosenjin and 2) the process of the original edition becoming the print book Ryōkō. The second stage undergoes a comparative analysis with Ryōkō. The study of how written conversation collections were compiled and produced, as well as taking this as a foundation for a discussion on their nature generally, is still in the early stages. This study is one such case, and although discovering other “texts being created” such as Chosenjin would help, this is not easy. Therefore, it is essential to use hitherto known sources to develop a methodology in explaining the process of compiling written conversations.
